War with Israel is Hezbollah's raison d'etre. Since the 2000 withdrawal they've been desperately searching for any excuse to perpetuate the conflict. They've tried the phony Sheeba Farms excuse, although the UN certified that Israel withdrew to the international border. They've used the Kuntar excuse; speading the false notion that Kuntar was the equivalent of a political hostage, kidnapped from Lebanon while just minding his own business. In 2006 they attacked; firing missiles at towns along the border while simultaneously attacking an IDF patrol. This was not their first attempt to attack since 2000, it was just the first successful one, and the final straw for Israel Some Lebanese use the silly excuse that Israel and Lebanon have never signed a peace deal, so if Hezbollah attacks, at any time, they must not be blamed for initiating hostilities - of course this same "right" doesn't apply to Israel, and of course to them it's only fair if Israel responds in a manner of Hezbolla
