Following the breakup of the Ottoman Empire circa 1920, it was the British and French that divvied up the whole Middle East. The Golan was GIVEN to Syria. The Golan is a piece of land that has been in the hands of many people's going back thousands of years. It has been won and lost all by war. When Syria had the high ground the assorted regimes would use it as a launching pad to attack Israel. No sanctions by the UN against Syria for those incursions. Finally in 1967 the IDF captured the Golan and for reasons of security the Israeli governments decided they were tired of being shot at from on high and so they made it Israeli territory. It has been quiet since. It is a terribly important defensive line and the chances of ceding it back to Syria is slim and none. .... unless there is a real peace agreement signed with the Syrian regime that is in control.
