Herzl: "We will not allow the theocratic tendencies of our religious leadership to raise their head....they will be very well-respected ... but they should not interfere in matters of state ... lest they bring upon themselves difficulties from within and from without." A democracy is no place for a religious hierarchy to dominate the public discourse or - even worse! - to attempt to impose religious doctrines as civil law - especially since the majority of the population is secular. It is time to separate religion and State!
