Why did Ben Gurion allow the religious a ticket out of military service? I believe it was to protect the secular from what he considered the damaging influence of the religious Jew. Perhaps he felt athiestic Zionism was a better salvation than the religious mindset that had kept jews powerless for 2000 years. Ben Gurion therefore set in motion a society that remains divided to this day. The religious remain tucked in their ghettos of Bnei Brak and Mea Sharim wearing 18th century outfits and impervious to change and present no threat to the Zionist hegemonists who feel athiesm and philosophy can defend the Jews better than faith in the G-d of Abraham. BG was wrong. Tribalism does NOT serve the Jews and divisions need to be torn down. Both sides can benefit from each other's influence. It's time to make the boys serve. In the long run Israeli society will only benefit. I suspect that any groups opposing such a change in the law are corrupt.
