As a Palestinian, I was hoping that the appointment of Amir Peretz as MoD would represent a breath of fresh air in Israeli politics following a succession of war mongers and macho crocks that blighted Israel and also have an adverse effect on us Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Sadly Peretz has done nothing to advance peace, he's done nothing to uproot illegal settlements or lift some of the draconian measures of the occupation which cause so much pain and suffering to innocent people. Sadly for both Israelis and Palestinians, the Israeli public by large still prefer 'the fluent macho with the cigar, even if he is corrupt, to the inarticulate labour leader' as Gideon Levy rightly observed. Israelis are obsessed with army 'heroes' and find their hawkish drivel almost intoxicating. Unless this attitude changes, the prospects of peace will remain a mirage.
