So it's basic skills the Haredim lack? I fear maybe it's the students in the Government schools as an aggregate have shown they aren't any better if I read the pages of HaAretz when they are compared to basic skills of school chidren in other nations. That; and the proposed shorter school day that will lead them down to even lower scores, perhaps.. The facts bear out that when Haredim "go for it", they do very well. In fact I read in the Marker that their achievements in the Bagrut are better on average than the students form the Government "secular" schools, and that sector usually takes the "short courses" not having any formal studies. Then again, a careful perusal of the Talmud offers all the "basic skill" in converntional math. Calaculus, and the other more sophisticated aspects of that discipline are usually studied by the more "mathematically inclined" among us, but within the course of studiying what is regarded as Sacred Studies, there are some fairly sopphisticated mathematical stuff. English, well, even that can be mastered in far less time than the "years" of study Government schools attempt to teach that language. You many disagree with the Haredi "world view", but that does not mean they are "ignorant. This " is just another way to prevent them from entering Israeli life on account of some Journalistic Old Wive's Tale..
