This is reminiscent of Bernard Avishai's solution of turning Israel into a Hebrew Republic, in which Israel's Jewishness would be based on a ''secular linguistic culture''. Thus, every citizen who can speak Hebrew, can consider himself to be part of the national majority. However, Ilouz seems to forget that Israeli Arabs want to be recognized as a national minority, which is in contradiction with the idea of an political nation encompassing all citizens. The status quo, with a better integration of the Arab minority, might actually be the only ''functional compromise''. Chaim Gans and Alex Yakobson wrote extensivelly on that topic.
