Universities are a long-term investment in producing scientific breakthroughs, better medical treatment, interesting ideas and theories at a world level, and most importantly, thoughtful and articulate citizens. If you don't want these - fine, then skimp on university funding, but in the end the whole country will be poorer. More funds to higher universities mean better libraries, better laboratories and better computer services for both students and lecturers. Most of all, they mean more jobs for the next generation of young scholars, so that after years of investing money and effort in their studies, we do not lose these valuable people to the States and Europe.
