But will that fool the world? A little thing has been missing in most of the discussion on whether the US shall or shall not. This little thing is that the US will not have Security Council backing. So, the US may be considering ways to attack Iran without seeming to attack it, and that would be by giving Israel the capability, as it did in the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973. But that is hardly likely to fool anybody. For one thing, the Israeli deception has unraveled and the world understands what Israel is up to. For another, the scale of an attack on Iran is vast, and will involve massive US contribution in treasure and possibly, at some point, in life. And finally, Nato will not participate. The possibility that the Americans will remain passive in such a situation hardly bears thinking about.
