Yossi Melman breathlessly tells us "Until about 18 months ago, Iran had some 10,000 active centrifuges there. Now, according to the reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, only 4,000 of them are operational." The truth is a bit different than the hype in this article. IAEA Report GOV/2009-55 "On 12 August 2009, 4592 centrifuges were being fed with UF6 and an additional 3716 centrifuges had been installed." Total number of centrifuges 8,308, of which 4,592 were working. Report GOV/2010-62 stated "On 5 November 2010, the 54 installed cascades contained 8426 centrifuges. The 29 cascades being fed with UF6 on that date contained a total of 4816 centrifuges, some of which were possibly not being fed with UF." There has been no drop in operations. The failure of the P-1 centrifuge program has led Iran to develop several subsequent indigenous designs, of which the IR-2m and IR-4 are under test at this time. The programs success was being wildly overstated in 2009, and it's sudden 'failure' is being wildly exaggerated now.
