Harel bemoans the high draft evasion rate (passive resistance?) in Israel, especially in Tel Aviv. Why is this? He lists 2 schools whose principals are unpatriotic, including one who said settlements view the IDF as a tool to keep the territories. Why does he not present evidence against this, or is it true? Draft dodgers are conformist? How about the 100% of settlement youth who go into the IDF? Is the IDF still an army or is it a brutal police force to be used against defenseless people with the most modern American weapons? The clear fact is that it can defeat any modern army, but not Hezbollah, Hamas, or the demonstrators against the Wall. 250,000 of the cream of Israeli society hold second passports, because they see a bleak future in Israel without peace, which requires giving up settlements and land. Otherwise, Mr. Harel will be crying his eyes out for a long time.

Why we don't know how to pick our leaders

Our craving for ideology means that we are partial to ideological leaders. But we need leaders who will make smart decisions that are aligned with the public interest.
