Menachem Begin opposed the UN Partition Resolution of 1947. Of course, how could he possibly give up part of Eretz Yisrael? After he became PM in 1977, Ariel Sharon proposed to him to declare that "Jordan is Palestine", so as to remove the claim that the Palestinians are a stateless people like the Jews were. Begin refused! He said, 'at this time, after the Holocaust, the Jews are too weak and cannot take over the EAST Bank of the Jordan river, but we still have the RIGHT to it, and one day we will take it.' Begin refused to give up his "rights", as Hamas doesn't. We can see what happened to Begin's rights. Begin died without affecting his rights, and his successor Sharon gave up on Gaza, while Netanyahu has publicly accepted a Palestinian state in part of the West Bank. No Likudnik is crazy enough to demand the EAST Bank of the Jordan. Reality has its power of persuasion. I expect today's Hamas leaders, or their successors to come to terms with reality. In the meantime, let us be realistic too and see how people's minds change to accommodate the real world.
