The issue is whether a liberal democracy can withhold from its citizens the most basic human right of marriage. The different groups can fight out their religious wars outside of the (Haredim don't accept conversions of the Dati Leumi etc. etc.) governmental sphere as they do all over the world. What is obnoxious and unacceptable for a modern democracy is to interfere and coerce the application of an issue of personal conscience. There should be a way for people to be legally married which does not require a religious act.
