for defending herself. The people in Turkey must by now realize that Israel's refusal to apologize is not based on some sort of principled refusal to apologize. Rather it is based on the conviction, which is surely right, that Israel doesn't have to apologize for defending herself. We all know that the flotilla was fully aware that Israel offered to deliver its "humanitarian cargo" but this was ignored. We also know that very serious weaponry has made its way into Gaza and has been used to shower civilian populations in Israel. Embargoes are standard in modern warfare. They are usually aimed at preventing weaponry from reaching the enemy. In this case, the purpose of the embargo was just that (given Israel's offer to deliver the non-military cargo) and is particularly justified since Hamas uses the weapons for offensive purposes. Asking Israel to apologize for what she did is like asking her to apologize for living. Its an outrageous demand unless it can be established that soldiers used unreasonable violence in enforcing the embargo. All the evidence that I have seen, even the testimony of many of those on the flotilla, point the other way.
