To Alain: I am contemptuous of Israel, certainly, but that comes from having spent 12 years of my life there. I loathe the tendency on the part of Zionist organizations and the state of Israel, that seeks to hold every nation in the world to their highest standard when it comes to Jews and Israel and if they do not fit the sympathetic image Israel demands of them, then they are termed ant-Semitic. But when it comes to the actions of Israel, Israel does not hold itself to such a high level of accountability and it demands that the world not question them or their actions and if they do then they will be attacked, slandered, delegitimized. After the Holocaust, they feel, standard levels of moraality do not apply to them. The attitude is a kind of: "How dare you judge us after what you did to us". I find this duplicious and I have no respect for it. If we are to be a light unto the nations then we must live up to what we proclaim ourselves to be to the nations. As for your relatives from Iraq and friends from Egypt, I suggest they return, though they would not be as affluent as they were before Nasser nationalized things. That is when most of the Greeks, Jews, Armenians and Italians left, choosing not to acquire Egyptian passports. I am sure there are Morroccan Jews in Israel who would love to leave but I should think more would prefer France or Montreal where they already have large communities.
