The Palestinians always surprise me with their tolerence and good will. However the Israeli settlers often respond with a vindictiveness rooted in zealotry. Having been in the West Bank, I have experienced both. The Palestinians are moving towards establishing a responsible, viable state. It is unfortunate the settlers cling to values and a hunger for Palestinian land that separates them from our Judaic heritage. In 1955, Ben Gurion understood how Arabs could hate the Jews because European Jews took Arab land. His hope was that generations later there would be a healing between Jews and Arabs. It appears the healing is slowly happening, but it is the Arabs that are making the extraordinary effort while settlers and Israeli leadership wallow in zealotry. When peace comes, it will come as a result of the efforts of the Arabs, the EU, the UN, and Russia. Hopefully the USA can join that effort and leave it's historic blind bias behind.
