The court's decision fills me with hope because it is proof that there are still people and institutions in Israel that care about equality before the law, and protecting the fundamental democratic rights of all citizens of the State of Israel. I am also afraid because the courts are the end of the line; the fact that it has fallen to the judicial system to protect the rights of individual citizens - since the police, security apparatus, and legislature refuse to do so consistently or equitably - means that all the other institutions that should have protected these young people's rights failed to do so. A country that arrests people for publicly expressing their opinions is a country that we should be very worried about. Iran terrified me, but our own internal demons terrify me just as much.
