The fact that Lieberman and his ilk are in government means the settlers are in power in Israel. That is obviously bad, no doubt. But to say that Israel was better of with a more powerful left is a mistake. During the tenure of ´leftist´ governments like those of prime ministers Rabin and Peres, record numbers of settlements were built and oppression of Palestinians was even more unlimited then before or after. In fact, the world community is now far more united in condemning the illegal Israeli occupation then before. Now, every single illegal building in the occupied territories is a reason for international uproar. Under Peres and Rabin, thousands of illegal houses were built without any specific condemnation. No political movement has been so damaging to the peace process as the Israeli labour party. The fig leaf it provided for the ongoing deepening of the occupation, the land theft and the oppression has been essential for its cruel success. It is far better for the fight against the illegal occupation of Palestine if there is a rightist settler government.
