Pope Benedict XVI is to be judged by his own the as a Christian, not a Jew, Muslim or secularist. His question of where was God is neither a capitulation of human responsibility or a questioning of the existence of God. It was said in the same sense that Jesus, for the pope, God Incarnate, cried out: "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me." ( a line from Psalms). And it hardly is an expression of exonerating man from the part he plays on the stage of human history. Man chooses, can choose even under the duress of histories worst dictators. The direction of the Church in its relationship to Judaism and the Jewish People is clear and there can be no going back. As for the quasi fascist radio station in Poland, the pope would be well advised to deal with it through his bishops in Poland. As for the role of Pius XII, that, I am afraid is a question on which most Jews and most Catholics will never agree and both sides should agree to humbly disagree.
