God gave us the freedom to make choices independantly. God gave us responsilibity. God is not responsible for what happened in Auschwitz, human beings are. The pope annoyed me too when he asked where God was. It was not even Hitler alone who was responible for those crimes. Hitler could not do that without the antisemitic climate in the European society. Christianity bears a huge responsibility in developing that antisemitism. The way of thinking that lead to the holocaust is not even gone today. The hostility only is diverted towards the muslims these days. I don't expect the pope to take much initiative. The church is in dire straits. If it will contribute to his popularity to build closer ties with the Jews he will, otherwise he won't.
