Army duty is underpaid and dangerous - very few of our youth do it because they want to - they give up three years of their lives because they see it, correctly, as an existential need for the country. One can never be sure what Gideon Levy's actual utopia is - will his soaked handkerchief have any room for his crocodile tears at watching the last jew leave the country - who knows. The rest of us do want peace and recognize the need to be strong until that peace comes - and we also recognize and demand that society recognize that the best of our youth the ones we should hold up as examples the ones we should be paying properly, the oens who we should be giving free university education too and heralding on television are the sons and daughters of this country who stand up and volunteer- either for the army or for national service and declare - this is our country and we give of our best for it.
