"History has proved that Israel never withdraws from its hard-line positions except after bloodshed and.. massive international pressure." - Gideon Levy Gideon, you are very wrong. The great advances towards peace occurred when Israel and the Jews were AHEAD of the US. Israel normally understands its situation better. Until 1998 it was forbidden for US officials to speak with the PLO. But a Swedish initiative brought moderate US Jews and PLO together. The result was Arafat accepting Israel's right to exist. US pressure brought Israel (Shamir) to the Madrid conference (1991). Nothing came of it. But in 1992 the Rabin government had the Oslo talks going, behind US backs. Clinton was happy to jump to the head of the parade. We can't rely on the US. They now, as always, are more practical than (even former) Likudniks. But following them will quickly involve Israel in the US misguided view of Hamas as part of international terror. Israel will be stuck again due to American delusions.
