Nathan's problem is not a lack of willingness to defend the Jewish state; he's proven that by his army service and he continues to defend Israel as a civilian through Friendasoldier.com. Nathan's problem is political shallowness and lack of understanding of people who are unlike himself. Like many secular Israelis he feels that the religious worldview is incompatible with full participation in the body politic. Some reason from that to the conclusion that the religious must be coerced to conform to the "right" values. Nathan thinks it's enough to exclude them from society.
