As a German native speaker, I can only say that although both languages are not the same, you can easily understand the other once you have learned one of them. And I guess that those Israelis learning German today are probably more accustomed to the German speaking culture than- and here I might get it totally wrong- to the Yiddish speaking, which tends to be a subculture with a high proportion of conservative believers.
