    He was a member of the Waffen SS. He was force drafted, like many others, into the Waffen SS at the age of 17 when the war was almost over. Apparently you don't know the difference between the Waffen SS and the SS. The Waffen SS was a fighting force used at the very front lines while the SS was the guards. I don't want to mitigate what the Waffen SS did, e.g. in Oradour sur Glane. Like with the ordinary army, some of the Waffen SS were brutes but you can't put them all in one group. It's way too easy to condemn them all. Anyway, I think Grass is absolutely right. Germany should have never delivered submarines to Israel and any other country which can be converted to nuclear missile platforms. I am German and I consider these deliveries critical. Don't get me wrong: I understand Israel's right to protect itself against potential aggressors. Yet, a nuclear strike would be ultima ratio only.
