A more precise comparison is one that involves history and the present. History tells us that in 1870, the pope lost his territorial expansionist ideal---occupying a great chunk of the italian peninsula. The pope at the time had no intention of giving up his proclaimed real estate. When the Italians completed their revolution the State of Italy, not the State of Catholics was born and the pope involuntarily lost his proclaimed right to his territorial claims. The pope was so peeved over his lost real estate that he volunteered to become a prisoner within the little territory he was allowed to occupy. It was not until 1929, when a treaty was signed between Italy and the pope that defined the papal domaine as Vatican City State, a little over a hundred acres of independent territory. And so it went. What has this got to do with Israel. If Jews were as smart as Italians they would not claim Israel to be a Jewish State; they would realize like the Italians that a Catholic State is an oxymoron, and so is identifying Israel as a Jewish State an oxymoron. Such a state can never function as a true democracy. P.S. having elections does not make a democracy---totalitarian states also have elections.
