The fact that the Gaza settlers are still in limbo is constantly in the media. Israel wants it to appear that "assimilating" these 8500 people is an insurmountable task. The west bank has in excess of 360,000 settlers. The scenario that Israel is trying to establish is that if 8500 are a huge problem to assimilate, then evacuating the west bank settlers seems quite impossible. One problem is that the Israeli leadership, never too subtle, has overplayed their hand in making the assimilation of the Gaza settlers such a problem. Rather than the problem seeming too large, at this point, it merely seems as if the Israeli government is incompetent and cruel.
