It is in Israel's interest to keep the border between Egypt and Gaza open. Israel has argued for years that Palestinian Arab refugees and their descendants should be resettled in other Arab countries, just as Jews from Arab countries were resettled in Israel. If the border stays open Gazans will be able to escape their teeming shanty towns, build lives Egypt and forget about their alleged claims to property in Jaffa or wherever. As for smuggling weapons, the fact is that the frontline has moved from Rafah to Erez. Nothing can be done about that short of reconquering the Gaza strip. The IDF will have to rely on fencing, deterrence and (if that is not enough) periodic raids.
