I hope this guy isn't on a tenure track, because he can't even get simple facts straight. Most Emerican Jews are either unaffiliated or barely affiliated with Jewish organizations, synagogues, JCC's etc. They do not care about Israel - and when the hat is passed around they look the other way. Support for Israel in America is the exclusive domain of religious Jews. Telling us other wise is like quoting the intermarriage rate of all American Jews instead of those who aren't religious, resulting in a misleadingly low figure. J Street has traction only in the eyes of it scant membership and following - they are totally discredited amoung every other group of American Jews. Shefer's hopeless liberal drivel masquerading as political "science" is nothing more than the hopes and dreams of a disenfranchised minority of intellectual masturbators whining and moaning over their Tel Aviv Lattes. MNoreover, because he has lost his neshama to the liberal ideology he tries to sneak into his analysis little word bites that are increibly inaccurate and deliberately fales. For example he says that "Undoubtedly, more than half of American Jews who identify as such will not support a religious definition of the Jewish nation and the State of Israel" This might be the only true statement in his article except it is irrelevant as the loyalty pledge being proposed has nothing to do with religion - only an affirmation of loyalty to a Jewish state. I would gues thatt he himself doesn't equate "Jewish" with "religious" any more than most Israelis do. What a sleazy hatchet job for a supposed "educator"
