Contemporary Polish Jews are often raised in an environment in which they are taught to be very secretive and embarrassed about their heritage. When spending time in Poland, I met a woman who was not informed she was Jewish until her mother was on her death bed. I have heard several other stories of this type for Polish Jewish families. This should put some context behind Bauman's perspective to explain how this type of polemical opinion may arise.
