If California pistachios are a superior product, then free market forces will provide the incentive for Israelis to buy them, rather than trong-arming by USDA officials. If high tech sensor is needed to detect whether pistachios come from Iran, they can't be that bad! Finally, if you want to champion the interests of California pistachio growers, Geoff, why not worry about billionnaire Stewart Resnick (chairman of Roll International) buying up California's pistachio groves and putting the California Pistachio Commission, representing the other 599 California growers, out of business by means of lawsuits claiming to disagree with its marketing strategy? He's the real threat to California's pistachio growers, not the Iranians. (BTW, Roll also owns California's citrus interests--Profesora Isadora is right about the possibility of the USDA someday discouraging US allies from purchasing Israeli citrus.) Let Israelis choose for themselves which pistachios they want to buy and eat.
