The headlines this week reeked of déjà vu, reminiscent of previous confrontations and intifadas, as conditions on the ground in Gaza are becoming more and more similar to those that preceded the 2014 war.19:05 05.02.16 | 4 comments
Israel always manages to scuttle progress in successive talks by putting forward impossible conditions that everyone knows aren't going to be and never could be accepted. It's a trick to buy time, so that the Judaization of the West Bank can proceed to its ultimate goal - a Jewish majority there. Here we go again. As well as Bibi's 14 preconditions, hardly any of which are realistic or even plausible, he wants the agreement to be implemented over several years and carried out gradually. Yeah, of course he does, it's the only way he can keep the settlements expanding, the Likud nationalist land acquisition project alive and the settlers on-side. He seems deaf to the EU, Fayad and others saying there must be and will be an independent Pal state by 2012. So we are certainly in for another bout of extended Israeli foot-dragging, obfuscation, denial and blaming everyone else. It's underway already actually, with Bibi blaming the PA for not wanting to accept his completely over the top preconditions. It's not a recipe for success, but then, it isn't meant to be, Israel wants land and a little Jewish empire, not peace, harmony and progress.
