Israelis have looked down upon the 'diaspora' and seen themselves as the only 'true Jews.' During the last 30 years Israel has become ever more contemptuous of not only the United States, but of American Jews. This arrogance is starting to have a cost, though Israelis seem to think that the 'solution' is to increase their demands upon America and their contempt for the reform and conservatives American Jews who refuse to move to Israel. It is of course a waste of time suggesting to Israelis that many Americans, and American Jews, think that peace in the mideast is more important than establishing an Arab free Greater Israel. Thirty years, or sixty, ago, it would have been inconceivable that American Jews would heckle an Israeli Prime Minister who they perceive as the threat to peace, the problem, the perfidious miscreant, and not the symbol of Zionist triumph. Familiarity can cause contempt, but contempt is bound to obstruct familiarity.
