I strongly disapprove of the centrality of the Holocaust in the identity of American Jews, for example. Ignorance of Jewish history, culture and traditions is so widespread there that the answer to 'what is a Jew?' has become 'a descendant of the people they tried to wipe out in WWII'. As much as I agree with arthur that it should be part of our education, I also agree with you that it should not be 'central'. There is more to Judaism than the tragedy of the Shoah.
