Turkey, Jordan and the Palestinians have all volunteered assistance. A calamity such as the fire shows that a fortress state still needs help from its neighbors. On the horizon is the threat of Iran's zealot leadership. There is a common understanding and fear of this threat among Israel and all of its Arab and Muslim neighbors. Some people say Israel was unprepared for the Carmel fire, and some may say Israel is equally unprepared for the Iran threat. The future of Israel is dependent on developing partnerships with its Arab neighbors, both security and economic. The days of being an island fortress are ending. It is time for reconciliation with Israel's Arab neighbors. It is also time to remove the greatest barrier to those partnerships. It is time to reconcile with the Palestinians and help them establish a free, independent, viable nation-state, whether it be the Olmert-Livni or Saudi 2002 Middle East peace plan. Zealotry can blind us to the realities of the world. The coming together of peoples to fight the Carmel fire should awaken us to those realities.
