If this practice had been nipped in the bud, it wouldn't have reached its presentr proportions. The secular public feels inferior towards the haredim, somehow thinking thbat they are closer to the "real" Judaism. Well,wearing 18th-century Polish nobility costumes doesn't make one any "closer" to the "real" Judaism.
