He wants more concessions from Israel and still advocates armed resistance. From El Manar. "Palestinian PM says resistance is 'legitimate right' Readers Number : 26 30/07/2007 Palestinian Prime Minister of the emergency Cabinet Salam Fayyad insisted that resistance is "legitimate right" after resistance fighters criticized the word's omission from his cabinet program, Egyptian state media reported on Monday. "We are an occupied nation and resistance is the legitimate right of the Palestinian people," the official MENA news agency quoted Fayyad as saying in Cairo late on Sunday. Hamas and Islamic Jihad slammed on Sunday Fayyad's failure to mention resistance in his cabinet program as abandoning "the mother of all principles of the Palestinian people, accepted and recognized by everybody." Fayyad was appointed to head the Palestinian emergency cabinet after the the Hamas movement overran the Gaza Strip in a takeover on June 15. But while Fayyad repeated the Palestinian right to resistance, he also said that "what happened in Gaza was unacceptable as it was a coup against legitimacy." His cabinet program, which was published over the weekend, does not contain the term "resistance," used by the Palestinians to describe armed struggle against Israeli occupation. The term was included in the program of the Hamas premier Ismail Haniya. The text says that among the top priorities of the government will be "working to put an end to the occupation and to create an independent state, with Al-Quds as its capital, on all lands occupied in 1967."
