    It's simply erroneous to think that most American Jews are engaged in sorting out the various sub-sects of domestic synagogue Judaism. Very, very few in my experience know or care about these issues. Believe it or not, most of us find these "discussions" tedious and arcane while being in no sense profound - the worst of all worlds! And please, spare me all the cliches about Weimar Jews believing themselves to be Germans first. Given that we all have a bias toward Israel, we don't want to be dragged into a WW I -type conflict by a Serbia-like maverick; we are horrified by haredim thuggish penetration into government and culture and the privileges they've extorted for themselves; we mourn the loss of even lip-service to an egalitarian economy and an idealistic, HONEST government; we're very troubled by the social barriers based on religion that this writer seems almost proud of, and, maybe most of all, we're really tired of Israeli whining. We know that we can travel to Russia, for example, and they seem to be through bemoaning their WW II losses even though, for FOUR YEARS, they suffered more casualties EVERY DAY than Israel has all together since 1948 - check it out. I haven't, by the way, touched on Israeli treatment of West Bank Arabs simply because I don't have enough information or the moral standing to deal with such a hideously complex problem.....
