The proximate cause of the outbreak of vioelece in 1969 was the majority reaction to the minority demand for Civil Rights. It is instructive to realise that the same rights that Martin Luther King was marching for in the US in 1968 were the ones Bernadette Devlin was marching for in Northern Ireland. The Similarities between the Palestinain situation today and that of the Catholic Minority in Norhern Ireland 40 years ago is quite striking. Michael Martin's viewpoint is correct. The conflict became pointless once both coutries became members of the European Union.
