And in both instances the politicians made use of the religious fanatics as a 'base' which could be driven to the polls by the threat of impending godlessness and their given mission to force their view of God on everyone. The problem is that eventually the politicians became dependent upon those fanatics. There came the time when the tail began to wag the dog. Now, in both cases, the dog has become rabid.
