In a democracy, one can expect politicians to make use of any 'opening'. What is important is their policies. Sarkozy and Netanyahu are doing their - rather difficult - jobs. On the other hand, I find quite revolting the exploitation of the same events by self-proclaimed 'enlightened' writers like the one who signed this hysterical column. Sarkozy is not anti-muslim and not colonialist. He called 'scum' the actual 'scum' who were terrorrizing their mainly North-African neighbour. He did not call so the entire immigrant population. That was a distorsion relayed by the media. Laor reminds me of other 'intelligent idiots' like Noam Chomsky and Le Monde Diplomatique, who are experts at using facts (and a lot of footnotes) to impress less intelligent idiots, while distilling their abject anti-Western venom, which is only a way of patronizing dictators and blood-thirsty fanatics under the guise of 'enlightenment'.

The story behind the most influential newspaper column in Israel's history
