Netanyahu chose to renege on his promise to release the last batch of prisoners, provoking the Palestinians into kidnapping ventures. He cholse to consciously wreck the Palestinian unity government, to accuse the Hamas leadership of being responsible for what was most likely a botched kidnap undertaken by local criminal elements. He then chose to subject the population of the Wesstban to collective punishment, embarking on a wave of arrests of people, ransacking houses and killing people, who had nothing to do with the kidnapping and then began to assassinate a few more Hamas members with drones in the Gaza Strip. It was at that point that Hamas had enough. I still remember the long ceasefire in 2008 between June and October, which Hamas scrupulously adhered to and which was unilaterally violated by Israel. Israel did not relax the siege one bit in an act of reciprocity or allowed the people of Gaza the freedom to trade, fish and visit relatives in the Westbank. It became clear then that it was not about Israel offering normalisation in Gaza in return for quiet. It was Israel's policy to overthrow Hamas, no matter what and it will do the same with any Palestinian resistance movement that is fighting for independence.
