Thank-you Meron for this wonderful piece of journalism. As an Israeli who has come to terms with Israel's past I am curious as to what existed before 1948. It's depressing and embarassing to read these myth-busting articles. Growing up, I prided myself on the myth that Jews were righteous and less corrupt than others. What we did to the Muslim shrines is equal to the Taliban blowing up the giant Buddhas. Over the years I've painfully learned that Jews are just people, not chosen nor better or worse than any others. And Israel is just a country - a place with vapid leaders, presidents embroiled in sex scandals, assasinations, and violent crime. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we owe the Palestinians an apology; not the Egyptians, Syrians or Jordanians -- just the people that were evicted or prevented from returning. I grant you that they would have done the same to us had they won the war -- but nevertheless, with hindsight, we should do the right thing.
