He was a swindler. He was not only bragging with preys he had not shot but always tried to influence politics. His greatest blunder was challenging the (Jewish-born) Austrian chancellor Kreisky for his Israeli-critical politics with a smear campaign. Doing so he bit off more than he could chew. Being accused by Kreisky of "mafia methods" he showed the white feather. Yet he kept inciting against the then Liberal party leader Haider for not accepting the concept of an "Austrian nation" apart from a German one. When the latter proved during a TV transmission that Wiesenthal in an application for (urgently needed) "Wiedergutmachung" had agreed to be an "ethnic German", the campaign broke down.
