Yes, Virgina, there are some people with "Jewish roots" that reach down to Sephardic Jews that were the result of forced conversions, in regions of the Spanish speaking world, that also includes, certain people in the American Southwest, all otherwise Roman Catholics that maintain certain religious practices that are "Jewish". They include not eating "bread" for seven days in the time around Easter, lighting candles on Friday night, not eating pork, and other "folkways" which they can't explain. Indeed, I have heard of a book that was written in Argentina describing the Jewish origins of some of the upper class Catholic families descrigning their Jewish origins that was pulled off the bookshelves at the stores under threat of some "higher authorities" --it would seem that some families preferred their identities remain sub rosa, For some reason, I am also told there people that send their domestics staff to buy kosher food at the Jewish community stores, yes, ertswhile non-Jews, or are they? These crypto-Jews understand there is a path back to Judaism, In fact, I have also heard in Monterey, Mexico, there is a congregation of Sepharidic Jews that were previously Roman Cathoics, as it were, but when the opportunity came, they converted "back" to Judaism. Some Jews understand Halacha is the standard, and others as in North America, that come out of a non-Halacahic POV have created another kind of crypto-Jew that ,at best, might develop some other kind of " non-Halachic Judaism" .
