Hebron has had a long, rich Jewish history. It was one of the first places where Abraham resided after his arrival in Canaan. King David was anointed in Hebron, where he reigned for 7 years. It was also the place of extensive fighting during the first revolt against Rome(70AD).Jews lived in Hebron almost continuously throughout the Byzantine,Arab,Mameluke and Ottoman periods. It was only during the mufti(Jerusalem) inspired riots in 1929 when 67 Jews were murdered and the removal of that Jewish community that Hebron became Juden free. For sake of historical honesty, we must also acknowledge that 19 Arab families, at great risk to themselves, saved the lives of many Jews, perhaps hundreds,by hiding them.
