I may be mistaken but it seems to me that Ben Gurion gave the Heredis exemption from military service in exchange for their support of the State of Israel. The apparent reason for the continuation of this devil's bargain is that the Heredis represent a large percentage of the Israeli population. If they decided to pull up stakes what would become of Israel seeing that the demographics are at this time vis a vis the Palestinians not favorable to Israel. Moreover, Yeshayahu Leibowitz years ago warned Israelis of the demoralizing impact of the occupation as well as its immorality. Too bad his assessments were ignored. Today Israel is stuck between the sacrificial animal and the altar. The Palestinians would be foolish to begin another Intifada even as they continue to be provoked by the IDF. They have the international community behind them as well as the international courts of justice---criminal and otherwise. As one Jewish scholar recommended---the Palestinians with the judgments of the international courts in one hand can tear down the separation (apartheid) walls with the other hand since the barriers have been judged illegal.
