Akiva Eldar managed to find a quote from the Talmud that illustrates the rabbis' belief in the value of human life. It's too bad that he did not take the trouble to find the passage in the Talmud (Gittin 45a) that states that one does not redeem captives for more than they are worth. Had he read that passage, he might not have needed to waste his time writing this column, as his questions would have already been answered. I am not sure by what calculation one Israeli soldier is worth 1000 "militants." I am not saying that one Israeli soldier is *not* worth 1000 "militants," only that I am not sure that I agree that the calculation was done correctly.
