Defense Minister Ehud Barak is a Sabra (born in Israel) and he has a lot of experience in dealing with Arabs. Barak knew that the late Yasser Arafat was admired (even beloved) by his people (Palestinian Arabs,) whereas Abbas and Fayed are being "propped up" in a similar way that President Eisenhower "propped up" Fulgencio Batista in Cuba in 1958. The new United States President (other than Rudolph Guiliani) probably will not be as supportive of Israel as President George W. Bush has been, and Ehud Barak understands this. Like Jimmie Carter, a former President has absolutely no power or influence in the new Government.
