When Egypt agreed to be a special watchdog on the Gaza border in preparation for the Israeli withdrawl from Gaza, it was with the understanding that Either Israel remains in the Philadelphi Road along the border OR Abbas/Fatah forces will control that border. In other words, there will be another force, on the other side of the border, helping stem the flow of smuggled goods. The US/Israel policy of encouraging a coup against the Hamas government resulted in the fight which ended with the complete Hamas take over. Now, there is nobody guarding the border but Egypt, and the blame goes to them alone. It is as if the US will not guard its own border with Mexico and accuse the Mexican government for all smuggling. As we see now, when Israel sends a force to the Gaza side of the border, it can find many tunnels. (I take it that the tunnels in the Gaza side are not as well disguised as on the Egyptian side because of Hamas control here.) It is an unfair situation, and an unfair accusation against Egypt. Egypt should suggest that the UN take over the guarding duty (UNIFIL-like) and return to the pre-disengagement posture, with a demilitarized Sinai. Why should they pay for Israeli and US mistakes?
